Procedure
Depending on the amount of excess tissue you would like to remove, the procedure can take 2-3 hours. Each gynecomastia procedure is personalized for your unique needs, and we can perform liposuction or surgical breast reduction to eliminate unwanted breast tissue. Some patients need a combination of both techniques to achieve a smoother chest.
For patients with breast tissue that is primarily made up of fat (adipose) cells, Dr. Friedlander can perform liposuction. During a liposuction treatment, Dr. Friedlander will make a thin incision and infuse the treatment area with tumescent fluid– a combination of lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline that causes the fat cells to swell for easy removal. He will permanently remove the targeted fat cells with gentle suction for a more masculine chest and smooth appearance.
For patients with glandular tissue, Dr. Friedlander will need to surgically remove it with an incision along the edge of the areola. He can also reposition your nipple to help you achieve a more natural look.
Recovery
Recovery after a gynecomastia treatment can take around 7-10 days depending on the amount of tissue Dr. Friedlander removes, the type of procedure you have, and whether or not he needs to reposition the nipple. You will need to adjust your exercise routine while you are recovering to avoid strenuous activities such as heavy lifting for several weeks. Your body needs adequate time to rest and heal.
