Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

The ageing process often significantly affects the face, and the area around the eyes can be commonly affected. Excess eyelid skin and sagging eyes are two of the most common conditions that may develop. In most cases, people who develop sagging eyelid skin are unhappy with their cosmetic appearance. In a small number of cases, excess eyelid skin may droop enough to affect vision. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is the most appropriate treatment for correcting sagging eyes and excess eyelid skin. Centre for Surgery is a centre of excellence for all types of blepharoplasty surgery, including eyelid reduction and eye bag removal.

What is excess eyelid skin?

The natural ageing process often leads to sagging skin due to the loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen provides structural support to the skin, and its natural decline over time results in a loss of skin elasticity. The upper and lower eyelids can be affected by skin laxity and loose skin, as the skin is inherently thinner in this part of the face, even when we were younger.

Many people are unhappy with the cosmetic appearance of their eyes because of loose eyelid skin. This can affect self-confidence, with many people avoiding socialising with others because they are increasingly self-conscious about how they look. In some cases, vision may be affected if excess eyelid skin begins to cover the eyes. This could make certain activities, including crossing the road or driving, hazardous.

Some early tell-tale signs of ageing often affect the eyelids, as the skin in this area is thin. In normal life, our facial expressions usually include blinking and squinting, especially in strong sunlight. Repeated contraction of the facial muscles can develop lines and wrinkles, affect the overlying skin, and cause a loss of skin elasticity, leading to the appearance of loose eyelid skin. Certain lifestyle habits, such as smoking, may accelerate the appearance of sagging skin, affecting the eyelids. Long periods spent in the Pigmentation & Sun Damage may also lead to sun damage and loss of skin elasticity.

While specific treatments, such as skin rejuvenation creams, facial exercises, and anti-ageing facials, are claimed to tighten loose eyelid skin, none are as effective as eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty is the best treatment for permanently removing excess eyelid skin.

What are sagging eyes?

The underlying levator muscle can raise the upper eyelids; weakness or stretching of the levator results in droopy eyelids and a sagging appearance.

The skin around the eyes is remarkably delicate and gradually loses elasticity as we age. Sagging eyes are a common outcome of ageing, combined with other lifestyle factors such as smoking and excessive sun exposure. Certain medical conditions may affect nerve and muscle function, which can cause the eyes to sag. Other causes of eye sagging include genetic conditions, eyelid injuries, and chronic eyelid inflammatory conditions. The best treatment for sagging eyes is eyelid reduction surgery, also known as an eye lift. Blepharoplasty surgery can also correct excess eyelid skin.

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is also known as eyelid reduction, eye lift and eye bag removal. Eyelid surgery targets the upper and lower eyelids for enhanced peri-ocular rejuvenation. Upper and lower blepharoplasty target the eyelids to address ageing changes in the skin, underlying muscles, and the eye region. Eyelid surgery is ideally suited for older patients aged 50 and older, but is often necessary for younger patients, particularly when there are underlying structural issues such as droopy eyelids, eyelid lumps, or puffy eyelids. Excess fat deposits which bulge outwards can also be addressed. These are known as eye bags and can develop earlier in life. Eyelid surgery can also be performed with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as a brow lift, facelift, or facial fat transfer.

Facial fat transfer or fat grafting is very commonly combined with eyelid surgery particularly when there is volume loss in the upper or lower eyelids.

What are the benefits of blepharoplasty surgery?

Blepharoplasty is highly effective for correcting hooded, drooping, or heavy eyelids and lower eyelids by surgically removing precise amounts of excess skin, fat, or muscle. Muscles weakened by the ageing process can be surgically tightened, which gives the skin a much tighter look and a rejuvenated appearance.

Blepharoplasty surgery takes no more than 90 minutes and is highly effective, achieving dramatic results with minimal recovery and quick healing. At the Centre for Surgery, patients also have access to several non-surgical treatments, including laser eyelid tightening. Patients with moderate to severe sagging of the eyelids will benefit more from eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty is suitable for both women and men of all ages.
