What Are Fillers: 7 Things to Know Before Your Consultation

Sep 15, 2022

With the popularity surrounding dermal fillers, what do you need to know about them?

In this article, I will talk about everything you need to know about dermal fillers before your consultation.

How Long Do Fillers Last?

Dermal fillers can last for up to 12-18months. In some cases, you need to have your dermal fillers injected again after four to six months. This ensures that the results the treatment dermal filler injections give are maintained. Different types of filler can last for varying lengths of time.

In addition, the easier the fillers get absorbed by your body, the shorter the results last. However, most modern day fillers are usually made of hyaluronic acid (HA), you can get it again. HA fillers are safe because there are made of a natural substance in your body. Hence, you don’t have to worry about getting them again.

Permanent fillers are best avoided they can lead to permanent issues, Dr De Silva has removed surgically many of these fillers over the years for unfortunate patients.

Are Fillers Better Than Botox?

Dermal fillers are as effective as Botox London. Both treatments are also safe since they are FDA-approved. However, they work differently.

For one, Botox (botulinum toxin) procedures treat deeper facial wrinkles. While dermal filler procedures can help with deeper lines and facial wrinkles, they work best for those with little to moderate problems.

In addition, Botox and other treatments don’t restore volume like dermal fillers do. Fillers are also made of HA, unlike Botox, which is derived from botulinum toxin.

So in a sense, the best treatment depends on your needs and goals. Botox is not better than injectable filler treatments and vice versa.

For instance, if you want to restore volume and soften facial creases, HA fillers are the best option. On the other hand, if the injection site is filled with wrinkles, your best bet is Botox in London, UK.

What Do Fillers in Your Face Do?

HA fillers can be used to restore volume and lessen the appearance of creases on the skin surface. It also helps get rid of a fatigued expression on the upper face.

Tear trough fillers, in particular, can treat the grooves and dark circles beneath your eyes. Injectable fillers (aka lip fillers) can also plump thin lips. Most HA fillers can also be used for a non-surgical procedure called the lunchtime nose job.

You can also restore the youthful look of your cheeks using cheek fillers. If you want to define your jawline, a filler strategically beneath yours will make it look amazing.

Are Hyaluronic Acid Fillers Good for Your Face?

FDA approved fillers contain HA, a substance great for the skin.

The human body naturally contains HA, with the joints, eyes, and skin having the largest quantities. HA draws water to your skin, hydrating it more.

So yes, HA fillers are good for your face. However, if you’re looking for wrinkle fillers or any type of filler, make sure that you’re receiving fillers from a certified and experienced cosmetic doctor or cosmetic surgeon like me, Dr. Julian De Silva using clean medical devices.

You also have to make sure to listen to your doctor’s advice to get the right fillers for you. Follow their injectable fillers guide. For example, FDA approved PMMA fillers are often used to treat medium to deep wrinkles and nasolabial folds.

If you’re looking for an excellent overall filler, I suggest having FDA approved caha fillers. These fillers contain HA and calcium particles, which work wonders for your facial muscles and skin cells.

Benefits and Risks of Facial Fillers

Dermal fillers have little to no negative effects if the correct candidate, filler, and technique are used. Complications may result if the dermal filler is not FDA approved and the application method is flawed.

Incorrect face filler application can result in tissue death, blood vessel burst, infection, dental blockage, severe irritation, and scarring. It can also make volume loss and other issues like smile lines appear worse.

Dermal Filler Do’s and Don’ts for Wrinkles, Lips, and More

Here are the seven things you know before your consultation:

Simply put, fillers restore the volume your face lost as a result of ageing. This typically affects the lips and cheekbone regions, but it also regularly reduces wrinkles beneath the eyes.

Do your research but don’t forget to list down the questions you have before meeting your cosmetic surgeon. Ask your surgeon if fillers are the best option for you.

Your cosmetic doctor knows how to help you become your most attractive and best self. While you have your own goals, make sure to listen to everything your doctor says. Take down notes if possible. Different fillers had varying qualities and are useful very specific areas of the face.

Have a clear idea of what you want, and make sure to say this to your doctor.

Although I am trained to detect even the smallest "imperfections" in my patients’ facial skin, I do not have psychic abilities. Hence, you have to tell me exactly what you want and what you expect.

Dermal fillers are gel like substances injected into the skin, so the actual treatment can cause discomfort. However, the pain is greatly tolerable and I do everything to make it as painless as possible.

Topical anaesthetic reduces the discomfort. However, rather than being painful, most patients describe the experience as being somewhat uncomfortable.

Budgeting is crucial, but you should also do your research to choose a board certified doctor with lots of experience. Plus, you should avoid ads that make you buy dermal fillers so you can inject them yourself. They may be cheap, but they will put your health at risk.

Remember, working with a board certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon is an investment that gives you more confidence. So, you should not cheap out on it.

Prior to organising or attending any big events, give yourself at least two weeks after your treatment. The majority of fillers take approximately that long to settle.

In addition, some patients experience mild bruising and redness after treatment. For these reasons, I advise delaying any significant photo opportunities until the fillers settle.

Do not touch the affected area for at least 48 hours after your filler treatment because the risk of infection is significantly increased during this period.

Facial Fillers’ Adverse Reactions

The most serious side effect of hyaluronic acid filler injections is vascular blockage. However, I know how to avoid, recognise, and handle issues related to hyaluronic acid fillers.

In addition, vascular blockage never happened at my Harley Street clinic, which is one of the top skin clinics in London.

What Are Injectable Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are smooth gel like compounds injected beneath the skin to enhance shallow contours, restore lost volume, and help with soft tissue augmentation. Those with poly l lactic acid helps with natural collagen production.

How Can Dermal Fillers Enhance My Appearance?

They also smoothen facial lines and supply the skin with HA, a naturally occurring substance in the body.

The procedure is done using medical devices under the care of a board certified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Julian De Silva. The treatment also serves as an alternative to cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery.

What Are Soft Tissue Fillers Made With?

Soft tissue fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the body.

Fillers with HA, calcium hydroxylapatite, and poly l lactic acid also smooth fine lines and stimulate collagen production.

Dermal fillers can be administered with other cosmetic procedures like facial fat grafting or autologous fat injections. They also help improve the appearance of acne scars and recessed scars.

Which Filler Do I Need?

The filler that you need depends on the recommendation of a board certified cosmetic surgeon. It can be challenging to decide which dermal filler product is ideal for you on your own, given the wide variety on the market.

Because each product is specially designed to have a specific texture, density, and injection depth, specific fillers are more effective for particular areas of concern.

What to Expect During Treatment

Receiving filler injections only takes 15 to 30 minutes. During the treatment, I will apply anaesthesia to the target area. Then, I will inject fillers made of a biodegradable synthetic substance. The amount depends on the fillers you need.

You can see some results right after the treatment. Once you are cleared, you can go home right away.
