What is Hyperhidrosis?
Sweating helps regulate your body temperature. However, for people with hyperhidrosis, the nerves that control the sweat glands in your body are overstimulated, which results in excessive sweating.
Hyperhidrosis can be classified as either primary or secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis often begins in childhood or adolescence. It usually affects the underarms, palms, feet or face. There is no known medical cause for primary hyperhidrosis. However, it often runs in families, suggesting a genetic link.
Secondary hyperhidrosis typically starts later in life. It usually causes excessive sweating across the entire body. This form is often linked to medical conditions like diabetes or hyperthyroidism.

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, anxiety and depression is more common in people who have hyperhidrosis. What is Hyperhidrosis Treatment?
Treatment of hyperhidrosis typically follows a step-by-step approach to manage excessive sweating and improve quality of life.
Initial treatments for hyperhidrosis often involve chloride-based antiperspirants. These are applied to the skin and can help block sweat glands.
If topical treatments are ineffective at controlling sweating, your doctor may suggest oral medications.
Oral medication can be helpful for people with widespread sweating (palms, soles, armpits, back, face, scalp), offering a full-body sweat reduction treatment.
Treatment usually starts with a low dose once or twice daily, which is gradually increased depending on effectiveness and side effects. Side effects are more likely with oral medications since they affect the whole system. These can include dry mouth, dry eyes and urinary issues.
If topical and oral therapies are ineffective, there are other options to treat hyperhidrosis. Botulin toxin injections can also be used for the treatment of primary hyperhidrosis of the palms, soles and armpits. These injections work by blocking the nerve signals responsible for activating the sweat glands, thereby significantly reducing perspiration in the treated area.
During the procedure, a specially diluted form of botulinum toxin is injected just beneath the skin. The sweat glands are located within the skin itself and the injections cause small, visible bumps at each injection site. Over the course of a few days, sweat production from the treated glands gradually stops.
This type of underarm sweat reduction is especially popular during summer. It helps people wear lighter clothes without worrying about sweat stains. It’s also beneficial for those in professional settings where underarm sweating can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. This hyperhidrosis treatment can reduce sweating for up to five and seven months, lasting you the whole season.
